The Bowflex TreadClimber is a fantastic three-in-one piece of fitness gear made by Nautilus. For regular gym-goers the name Nautilus is synonymous with quality and innovation. The Bowflex Tread Climber does not disappoint.

Basically a hybrid of what are traditionally three different machines; the treadmill, stair climber, and elliptical machine, the Bowflex Tread Climber combines the benefits of each into a smooth, efficient workout machine. The treadmill/elliptical aspect provides cardiovascular training, and the stairs component provides resistance training, thus increasing the amount of calories burned, and developing muscle. The combination means that training time can be reduced, and regular training times will result in increased benefit.

Using the Bowflex TreadClimber

Bowflex suggest a thirty minute workout, three times a week to get an excellent cardio and resistance workout. The machine is designed with 'dual-treadles' which work the large muscles more or less independently, unlike a traditional treadmill. The machine is made with high grade carbon steel, and has sufficient weight to prevent 'rocking' or movement across the floor, a common problem with home systems. The Tread Climber's movement allows for walking forward in a natural manner, but also stepping up, as in a stair climber. Instead of foot pads like an elliptical machine, the Tread climber is more like a 'split' treadmill, with a large surface for natural foot movement, with minimal impact. It is more of a walking motion than running. This makes the machine ideal for elderly users or those recovering from injury.

Benefits of the Bowflex TreadClimber

The Bowflex TreadClimber provides a variety of speeds, movements, height and resistance levels to keep workouts from 'levelling out' and to intensify training periods. The interval training sessions are a real workout, with great results. Speeds and intensity levels can be programmed to change throughout, and this allows the body to adjust and 'rest' before really digging into the next phase. Body-builders are familiar with interval training techniques, but a lot of treadmill and indoor gym equipment does not do a good job of mimicking the varying intensities of outdoor training. This machine does. One drawback is the inability to switch resistance without stepping out of the Tread Climber first. This means a lot of fiddling with the programming. However, it also means you can't just 'coast' whenever you feel like. You will have to follow your program to the end.

Impact Assessment of the Bowflex TreadClimber

By using the dynamics of an elliptical machine, the Bowflex TreadClimber dramatically reduces impact to joints. Knee movements are also fluid, without the constant jarring associated with running, while still providing the workout of moving full leg muscles. Also, the style of machine allows for a more compact design, taking up a third less space than a traditional treadmill. It is also a quieter machine to use, without the jarring impact noise of running on a traditional treadmill, and with a quieter motor.

The Bowflex TreadClimber is a revolutionary hybrid that is a fantastic choice for the home training enthusiast. Unfortunately, all that clever design comes at a price: this is an expensive machine. However, for those who are committed to maintaining great health and fitness at home, this machine would be a worthwhile investment.
